Choosing the right school is very important to your success in earning your degree. You have to ask important questions such as why do you want a degree. There is no wrong answer. Some want a degree to add to a resume, as others need it for a promotion. Then there are others who want to learn and enter a new career path. The choose is yours.

Just know you have to weigh the pro and cons of each school. This is including cost, length of courses, methods of testing, and how well you do with primarily independent learning online.

I want to be clear, there are other schools that are similar in some ways to WGU and UMPI. I personally believe that these two are the best for those who want to excel in Competency Based Education (CBE).

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is my alma mater. I love this university for what they do and offer. The university has a campus in Maine, in which it is a normal functioning university. They have in person students, give scholarships to athletes, and most importantly, they are regionally accredited.

UMPI offers the YourPace program that is designed for the working class people, of all backgrounds. It is completely online and is ideal for those who might have an unusual schedule. There is an age requirement to enroll in the program. The student must be 20 years old.

The courses have milestones that need to be completed before reaching the final. Most finals and milestone requirements are heavy on writing essay's, rather than taking an exam. If you enjoy writing, this is beneficial to you. Another huge benefit in their method of grading finals, they allow for you to submit a draft of your final to your professor. The professor will return your finals with the recommended corrections for a passing or better grade. What does this say? They want you to learn, grow, earn, and pass the course. This university is for you, the student.

UMPI charges by sessions and not by credit hours, which is terrific. This means you pay a flat rate and finish as many courses as you can in a single session of 8 weeks. This will save you loads of money. Currently a term cost the flat rate of $1,500 for undergraduate, $2,150 for graduate. This cost is AMAZING for a higher education. This says a lot about the university and their intentions for the student and their education.

UMPI's YourPace program offers plenty of degrees from Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Psychology, and several others. This university is a win win. The YourPace administration, admissions, academic success coaches, and others are outstanding. Whenever I would have a question or concern, they were all very quick to email me an answer or guidance.

*********** IMPORTANT************ UMPI YourPace program is very transfer friendly. This is extremely important in regards of earning your degree in accelerated manner. You will be able to earn your degree in half the amount of time than the traditional route of 4-5 years at any other university. UMPI accepts a wide range of ACE accredited courses and certificates. Acceptance of certain courses can change, they are still one of the best in accepting transferable credits.

Most of their degrees require a total of 120 credit hours to graduate. UMPI will allow a total of 90 credit hours to be transferred in. That is remarkable. This means that UMPI only requires you to complete 30 credit hours (10 courses) in their program, if you are able to transfer in 90 credit hours. Transferring in 90 credit hours is definitely doable with third party platforms such as Study.com and Sophia. In which both offer ACE accredited courses. A plus is that UMPI will allow you to transfer in more credit hours after the start of the their program. WGU does not have that option.

UMPI I have had the pleasure of meeting the president of the university and a few of my professors. I was moved and impressed with their heart for the students and education. I highly recommend this university; my experience was a dream come true. I am not earning a penny from UMPI, this is just pure elation that there is a university that is actually showing their heart for the student by tangible proofs. My daughter just earned her B.A. in Business Administration from UMPI. My younger son is actually planning on holding off with his education until he is 20 years old, so he can enroll in the YourPace program.

I can not recommend UMPI enough. They are on the forefront of revolutionizing the availability of an higher education, and education in general. UMPI has cleared the way for minorities just like me, to earn a degree. I am the first of my family to earn a bachelors degree, I will not be the last.
